Litanei (1816)
       music by Franz Schubert (1797 - 1828)
poem by Johann Jacobi (1740 -1814)

Litany (for All Souls Day)

Rest in peace, all souls:
who have done with anxious torment,
who have ended a sweet dream,
satiated with life, hardly born,
gone over from the world
all souls rest in peace.

And those upon whom the sun never smiled,
who under the moon lay sleepless upon thorns,
that in the clear light of heaven
they may one day see God face to face:
all who have departed,
all souls rest in peace.

       All Through The Night

Sleep, my child, and peace attend thee
All through the night.
Hopes for slumbers sweet we send thee
All through the night.

Soft and drowsy hours are creeping
Hill and vale in slumber steeping
We our loving vigil keeping All through the night.

Those who love are ever round thee
All through the night.
In thy slumbers close surround thee
All through the night.

They should of all fears disarm thee
No forebodings shall alarm thee,
They will let no peril harm thee,
All through the night.

Special thanks for help of all sorts
