Lisa Wellbaum studied with Alice Chalifoux at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She served as principal harp in the New Orleans Symphony before joining The Cleveland Orchestra in 1974. During her thirty-three years as principal harp, Wellbaum performed a vast orchestral repertoire. She served as soloist with the orchestra many times. Under Christoph von Dohnanyi, she recorded Mozart's Concerto for Flute and Harp for the Decca label. Wellbaum was soloist on the Deutsche Grammophon recording of Debussy's "Danse sacree et danse profane" conducted by Pierre Boulez.
