Classes and Schedule

The workshop schedule includes four daily classes, morning exercise/dance, and impromptu group playing. These classes are appropriate for Intermediate to advanced recorder and viola da gamba players. The schedule includes a faculty concert on Tuesday night, student concert (and open mike) on Friday, and a free afternoon on Wednesday to give you time to explore the beautiful Carmel Valley area, play music, or just relax.

Our theme this year is "Music of France and Italy", giving us lots of beautiful and rewarding repertoire. Classes being offered this year include:

- Technique classes geared toward application of technique practice to the repertoire - making music out of notes!

- Taking the Mystery out of Ensembles: How to choose repertoire, assign instruments, work on tuning, prepare for performances, and more.

- An Introduction to French Baroque Ornamentation: Making Agréments Agreeable! Trills, port de voix, battements, tour de chanter, and more. Learn how to decorate your part with graceful ornaments in duos and trios by Hotteterre, Boismortier, Philidor and others.

- Couperin's La Sultane for recorders, viols, and harpsichord. This masterpiece by François Couperin is a virtual tour of early 18th-century French style with all its grace and elegance.

- Beat Generation: an introduction to percussion and its use in early and traditional music

- Medieval Dance Music from Italy and France: learn to create accompaniments and percussion parts to monophonic dance music

- Improvisation in 16th century Italy

- L'homme armé: mass movements and chansons based on one of the top hits of the French Renaissance

- A Musical Diaspora: Jewish composers of the Italian Renaissance and early Baroque

- All-Workshop Orchestra, conducted by Frances Blaker

- Master Class for recorder and viol players

Location

The workshop takes place at the Hidden Valley Institute for the Arts in Carmel Valley, California, nestled amongst oak and buckeye trees below majestic hillsides. Along with our rich opportunities for music making, bird watching and walking can be enjoyed nearby.

Information/Registration

The Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel) Early Music Workshop is open to adult recorder and viol players of all ages (no longer only to those over 55 years of age) who play at intermediate to advanced levels. Harpsichordists also welcome.
