Next Level Recorder Retreat - February 21 - 25, 2018

Retreat for upper intermediate - advanced players

Master musicians Frances Blaker and Letitia Berlin have created this four day intensive retreat for intermediate and advanced recorder players who are ready to elevate their craft to the next level.  WIth a very limited enrollment of 16 participants, the retreat offers intensive sessions on topics including:

Articulation- technique and application

Finger facility- exercise and drills to improve security and agility

Breathing and Blowing- development of breath control and tone

Sight reading and playing by ear- methods and exercises to improve your skills

Keeping your Place and Rhythm Training- repertoire chosen espeially to fully incorporate these skilsl into your playing

Repertoire Sessions- participants play music together

Lecture/discussion- on music history and music forms

Consort playing and ad hoc playing sessions

Tibia is the recorder duo of Letitia (Tish) Berlin and Frances Blaker. Tish and Frances live in Albany, California, where they work as free-lance recorder players and teachers. Frances studied recorder in Denmark and Holland, with Eva Legene and Marion Verbruggen. Tish studied piano performance in North Carolina with Inga Morgan, and early music performance practices at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Tish pursued private recorder study with Frances, Marion Verbruggen, and others. Tish and Frances are members of other groups as well: the Farallon Recorder Quartet, Calextone (with Shira Kammen and Allison Zelles Lloyd) and Ensemble Vermillian (Frances with her cellist sister Barbara, Elisabeth Reed, viola da gamba, and Katherine Heater, harpsichord). Tish and Frances travel a large part of the year, performing and teaching at recorder workshops. They have  both served on the board of the American Recorder Society, a membership organization serving the entire community of recorder players and lovers of the recorder.
