Road Scholar Early Music Workshop (Week 1)

Two fabulous weeks - choose either week or both!

Week 1: October 27 - November 2
Week 2: November 3 - November 9

The workshop schedule includes four daily classes, morning exercise/dance, impromptu group playing, as well as evening events including a faculty concert each week and a student concert each Friday evening. These classes are appropriate for Intermediate to advanced recorder and viola da gamba players.

Our theme this year is music from England, Spain and the New World featuring master instructors Tish Berlin, Louise Carslake, Claudia Gantivar, Frances Blaker, and Mary Springfels.
 
Three of the Early Recorder faculty, Tish, Louise, and Frances, are also members of Bay Area-based early music group Farallon Recorder Quartet that perform the music of the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Modern Eras.  On October 27 Farallon Recorder Quartet present a concert at Hidden Valley, open to the public, exploring the influence of Spanish composers and colonizers on the music of Central and Southern American societies.  The program features a lively mix of folk-influenced negritos from manuscripts in Oaxaca and Bogata, music by Spanish composers Juan Vasquez, Diego Ortiz, and Mateo Flecha, and sacred works from manuscripts in Guatemala City and Mexico City.
 

Location

The workshop takes place at the Hidden Valley Institute for the Arts in Carmel Valley, California, nestled amongst oak and buckeye trees below majestic hillsides. Along with our rich opportunities for music making, bird watching and walking can be enjoyed nearby.

Information/Registration

The Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel) Early Music Workshop is open to adult recorder and viol players of all ages (no longer only to those over 55 years of age) who play at intermediate to advanced levels. Harpsichordists also welcome.
