Enhance your technique and ensemble playing during an intensive workshop with director Letitia Berlin and other stellar faculty. Two fabulous weeks - choose either week or both! Week #1 October 29 - November 4, 2023.

Recorder, viol, dulcian, & shawm technique classes geared toward application of technique practice to the repertoire - making music out of notes! Master class and consort classes.

Location
The workshop takes place at the Hidden Valley Music Seminars, An Institute of the Arts in Carmel Valley, California, nestled amongst oak and buckeye trees below majestic hillsides. Along with our rich opportunities for music making, bird watching and walking can be enjoyed nearby.
Schedule
The workshop includes four daily classes, morning exercise/dance, and impromptu group playing. Wednesday includes a free afternoon to explore the beautiful Carmel Valley area, play music, or just relax!

- Evening tutti playing sessions – all welcome (in addition to recorders and viols, bring your krummhorns and other reed instruments if you have them)
- Evening playing sessions, led by YOU! Bring your favorite pieces and be a conductor for an evening!

- Open Mic on Friday after dinner

COVID Prevention Measures- updated August 2023
Road Scholar no longer requires COVID vaccination, though keep up to date on vaccination and boosters is strongly recommended.
Hidden Valley is requiring testing and isolation measures that go above the current Road Scholar policies for the Early Music program.
Proof of a negative COVID test on the day before arrival, the of arrival, and the middle day of the week (Wednesday) will be required of all faculty and participants. Those who are attending both weeks must test on the middle Sunday as well. Photos of tests may be sent to Tish Berlin at tishberlin@sbcglobal.net. Anyone testing positive for COVID will be asked to isolate and leave the workshop. Participants are responsible for providing their own tests, FDA approved at-home tests are fine.
Masking is highly recommended though not required.
Anyone with symptoms that might be COVID or other infectious diseases should stay home, or if the symptoms begin after arrival, must be isolated or leave the workshop.

Recorder players must be able to play at least one F instrument and one C instrument. Week two includes a renaissance reeds track. Harpsichordists also welcome. Harpsichordists, please contact music director, Tish Berlin tishberlin@sbcglobal.net before registering. Participants must bring their own instruments.

Registration Deadline - There is a new Road Scholar policy that all programs will be closed to enrollment 35 days before the start. This means that you MUST register for the Early Music Workshop week #1 through Road Scholar by Saturday September 30th.
