Program: Seventeen of America's finest young woodwind players are selected by five master teachers. They will gather at Hidden Valley for two weeks of intensive learning, rehearsal, and performance. This important project has significant implications for the growth of wind music and young American players. Presented in the intimate Hidden Valley Theatre, the four-concert Festival of Winds series: August 7, 9, 12, and 16 at 7:30 p.m., includes some of the most beautiful and interesting works composed for wind instruments.
A Festival of Winds fellowship includes side-by-side chamber music performances with faculty members, masterclasses, private lessons, and other festival-wide group sessions. The fellowship is tuition-free. Each fellow will be provided with their own private room, and all meals are included. Fellows are responsible for travel to and from the Hidden Valley Music Seminars campus.
Festival History: For 60 years, Hidden Valley has offered the finest in Master Classes, choral, orchestral, small ensemble, and opera training and performance. Former participants are in principal positions among the world's top orchestras and opera companies.
This program started in 2021 because of the reduced opportunities for wind players during Covid. Elaine Douvas, Principal Oboist of The New York Metropolitan Opera and Hidden Valley's oboe master teacher for nearly 15 years raised the funds to make it possible for 22 brilliant players and five master teachers to gather at Hidden Valley for ten days of intensive learning, rehearsal, and performances. Contributions covered the direct costs of the Festival to make this a cost-free opportunity for exceptionally talented upcoming winds players.
It soon became evident that the intensive and extensive concentration on the winds' repertoire was a unique and very valuable opportunity for all involved. We believe it is unmatched anywhere in the American musical scene. All faculty and students asked that we offer this again. We believe that we have a genuine responsibility to continue this exceptional program.
