Celebrating Santa Catarina

November 20th 2022

There is a special connection between Carmel Valley and Santa Catarina, a small town in central Mexico named for the saint. Many families on the Monterey Peninsula have roots there starting in the early 50's and 60;s. In 2007, in recognition of this deep connection, a priest there constructed a statue of Santa Catarina and had it sent to Carmel Valey, with the promise from our local residents to honor her feast day every November. Since that time, on the Sunday closest to November 25, there has been a Mass and a festival followed by a pilgrimage of teh statue to a different home each year.

In 2014 the local Santa Catarina committee became a non profit organization so that the funds raised by the annual festivals could promote the betterment of the social and economic conditions for the people of Santa Catarina, Mexico.
